Introduction

We aim to develop you from an individual that has little or no experience, to someone that has a firm understanding of mountain navigation techniques. We will explore traditional navigation techniques such as map and compass use. As well as more up to date techniques such as GPS. However, this will all be backed up with practical walking.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideally suited to individuals that have an interest in hill walking but do not feel confident to do this on their own. Moreover, a good level of fitness is required. As you will be walking in the hills for long periods.

What will I be doing as part of this course?

We start off with gaining an understanding of basic mapwork. Eventually we will move to more complex topics. For example, interpreting maps and using compasses. Once these skills have been learned, you will then progress onto learning about GPS. We aim that by the end of the week, you will be able to navigate a range of routes both in the UK, and overseas. The course will be backed up by evening sessions on:

    • Mountain weather
    • Equipment
    • Emergency procedures
    • Planning a mountain day

We will develop skills so that you can navigate both during the day and at night. And we will adapt to the weather, regardless of the prevailing conditions.
